What is Slow Fashion?<\/strong><\/p>

In simple terms slow fashion is the opposite movement to the fast fashion industry which is built around cheap fast production that can be bad for it\u2019s employees and the environment as well as being mainly used by customers as wear until worn throw it out and that clothing then ends up in landfill as is the current fate for most clothing.<\/p>

Slow fashion is about making the production of the clothes more eco-friendly or trying to extend the usage time of the clothing or it\u2019s materials for as long as possible or even a mix of both. Slow fashion no longer has to be just for the eco-warriors as every day there are more eco-friendly alternatives for the production, materials, and printing of clothing we wear meaning there are more eco-friendly options and quality keeps improving so you can wear more of what you like with sustainable fashion choices.<\/p>

What are some of the methods of slow fashion?<\/strong><\/p>

The ones we will be talking about today are re-use or thrifting of fast fashion, recycling some or all the clothing material, organic production from the start that can be recycled when worn over and over.<\/p>

Firstly let\u2019s be clear that we are not saying that any of these methods will have no impact on the environment as all production, transport and all the other processes that go into making clothing has some impact no matter how eco-friendly the idea is to minimize the impact to the environment and maximize the lifetime use of the clothing while also being fairer to the workers.<\/p>

Re-use or thrifting of fast fashion?<\/strong><\/p>

This is probably the most commonly used method right now for the fast fashion clothing that people no longer want but don\u2019t want to throw away to landfill, so they donate the clothing to a charity or sometimes re-sell to sites or people buying second hand clothing which does of course extend the lifetime of the clothing people may also upcycle or downcycle some of the materials but eventually the worn out clothing ends up in landfill.<\/p>

Recycling some or all material<\/strong><\/p>

This can be a good option for some fast fashion clothing like 100% cotton clothing which may be able to be recycled through schemes like the teemill \u201cthread not dead\u201d which recycles 100% cotton clothing the problem is that most fast fashion clothing tends to be mixed with other materials like synthetic fibres for strength, durability or printing which makes it difficult to recycle so most of this clothing will also end up in landfill rather than recycled.<\/p>

Organic & sustainable production with clothing meant to be recycled<\/strong><\/p>

This option is for the clothing like the type we sell in our store made from GOTS certified 100% organic cotton that is more sustainably produced by having organic growing of the cotton, the clothing is produced in factories powered by renewable energy and designs printed with inks that are more eco-friendly usually water based inks and all the clothing is designed to be sent back when worn out to be recycled through remill fibre.<\/p>

Slow fashion is about taking better care of the people that make the clothing as well as making the most out of the materials used for the clothing from making the lifetime of the clothes as long as possible to trying to minimize the impact on the environment created by the production and eventually throwing out of the clothes by having options other than simply clothes going to landfill. The reality is that there will always be pros and cons to any type of clothing we choose to wear such as more eco-friendly water based inks printed clothing designs that may not last as long before fading or cracking due to the ink not being mixed with micro plastics or synthetic materials which is better for the environment but may mean some designs may fade faster.<\/p>

In conclusion slow fashion is not about finding the one solution that will solve all problems it\u2019s about finding the best solution for the type of clothing that you may have right now or maybe making different decisions for the clothing you may wish to buy in future by deciding which option is best for you and which pros and cons of each option is most important to you.<\/p>
